One of the ways I would like to influence the recognised need for regular funding and provision for perinatal mental illness is by reaching out to the providers of services. I would love those people who sit around a table and plan budgets to be aware of the need and how preventative services are far cheaper than recovery. There are many practitioners and parents who know how vital it is – I want those who commission and fund services to also appreciate this. I therefore asked William Greenwood, who has many years of experience in the management and administration of services, to review my book. This is what he responded with:

“I met Elaine some years ago and during our conversation she gave me a copy of her first book. I am very grateful to Elaine for giving such an honest account of what happened to her. It was a compulsive read. I am sure it gave hope for the future to woman who have/ are suffering from postnatal illness. It cut through the isolation of this illness and proved to me that clinical colleagues need to seriously think about the person in front of them as an individual and not just some sort of textbook model.

In my opinion, every health professional and not just clinicians should read not only the first book but anything Elaine has to say on the subject.

This second book was a very different read for me in that it delves into the realms of being a source of information and reference work. For me another excellent book. It brings together a lot of practical text this time– the sort of things you might spend hours looking for on the internet, or trying to find the ‘right’ person to ask. This books primary aim is to bring together the facts, resources, discussion points and information to help people make an informed decision. The core message remains that each situation is as unique.

Another very informative book that, for me, brings an understanding of what being human is really like when faced with a very personal decision in a world of clinicians. It should be a standard reference book for G.P.s, hospital consultants and midwives.

And finally, at a time when the NHS has stated that ‘parity of esteem’ is a key objective (equality in both mental and physical health treatment) I think the book is a timely reminder about the human nature of the people it serves.”
