One of the ways that I motivate myself with achievements is to visualise a scene in my mind that I am working towards. I first became aware of this technique when I gave up my teaching career to focus on my perinatal mental health pathway and I did some part time work selling cosmetics and jewellery . I will always remember going to my first sales conference with all the razzmatazz that went with it. After all the awards and prizes were given out, they launched the next prize holiday for us to aim for. As they showed an amazing film of the sights and experiences of New York, I felt the fire inside me to be there. As they painted a picture of us sipping champagne on a private yacht overlooking the Statute of Liberty, I knew I had to get there. For the months ahead, each time I went to deliver a sales event for that company, I visualised the dress I would be wearing; the taste of the champagne; the feel of the wind in my hair; the sights of the New York skyline at sunset.

The following summer I was there in reality! I did the same to get me to Rio de Janeiro and on the Orient Express! It has become my personal encouragement to drive whatever I am working towards. So when I spoke to a lecturer from Salford University about wanting an event to launch my second book, I was thrilled when she referred me to the team at Salford CPD. A couple of times I have spoken in the 300 seat lecture theatre there and so my vision of the conference on the 23rd September has been in that very room. I now have the new outfit so the picture has been strongly printed.

I felt a little crushed last week when I was informed that students at Salford take priority (naturally) and that they would find another venue. Initially I was so disappointed as my vision had to evaporate. I reassured myself that it is just a building – the main focus are the people coming to share and learn.

Then last night I was informed that we have a venue confirmed. I am not a football fan – I do know that the chosen venue is known globally – Manchester United, Old Trafford! Known affectionately as ‘The Theatre of Dreams’. How fitting is that?!

Excited to share this privately last night I phoned my Mum. She knows I was disappointed about the lecture theatre. With a matter of fact tone I told her that the new venue had been found – a church hall in Didsbury! Always the encouragement to me, I could hear her squirm as she attempted to find positive things to say! A cruel tease, I know! I would have been okay with a church hall in Didsbury – I’m truly excited at the prospect of Old Trafford!

Someone asked me what is different about my second book launch from the first:

1. I am 10 years older and in a number of ways wiser

2. We had a party for a few people in our home, where we spread out into our adjoining garage!

3. My boy is now studying for his photography degree and will be taking pictures on 23rd September.

4. I am honoured to have a professional team sorting all the planning for this second launch and stunned at the support I have from the healthcare professionals.

5. I am delighted to be able to provide a space for other parents who have lived experience of perinatal mental illness to attend and inspire others.
